Course Purpose
This foundational course trains new and active healthcare support workers to deliver safe, ethical, person-centred care for elderly and clinical patients. It builds core professional knowledge and hands-on baseline skills for entry-level caregiving roles, linking theory to real-world elderly care, home care and clinic support work.

Define the core framework of caregiving practice. Learners clarify daily job duties and clear professional boundaries to avoid overstepping practice limits. We cover workplace standards and healthcare ethics, plus core care principles including upholding patient dignity, protecting patient rights, and following strict medical confidentiality and privacy protocols to deliver fully compliant, respectful care.
Module 2: Communication Skills

Module breakdown:
Build clinical communication skills tailored to elderly and general care environments. Learn empathetic verbal and non-verbal techniques for all patient age groups, including seniors with limited communication capacity. Master how to engage patient families, manage enquiries and build trust. Practice collaborative communication with doctors, nurses and other care staff for smooth team workflows. Training covers active listening to capture patient symptoms and needs, plus standard medical record keeping and formal incident reporting processes.
Module 3: Infection Prevention and Control

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Environmental cleanliness
Module breakdown:
Essential safety training for all home, nursing home and clinical care settings. Understand the full chain of infection including infectious agents, transmission routes, susceptible hosts and environmental risks. Master universal standard precautions as baseline safety rules for all routine care tasks. Practice scenario-based hand hygiene before, after and during emergency care. Learn full PPE workflows: correct selection, step-by-step donning, proper usage, safe removal and hygienic disposal of gloves, masks and gowns. Learn systematic sanitisation and disinfection for care spaces, medical tools and daily living areas to eliminate infection hazards and protect patients and caregivers.
Module 4: Basic Anatomy and Physiology

Body systems overview
Common age-related changes
Understanding common medical conditions
Module breakdown:
Foundational medical knowledge for daily caregiving. Gain a clear overview of major human body systems and normal physiological function. Focus heavily on typical physical and functional changes that come with ageing to deliver age-appropriate elderly care. Learn the basic symptoms, risk factors and suitable care approaches for common elderly illnesses, so you can spot abnormal health signs and coordinate effectively with medical teams.
Overall Course Learning Outcomes
After completing this Introduction to Caregiving 101 training, participants will:
Understand HCA roles, practice boundaries, ethics, patient dignity rules and confidentiality standards.
Deliver empathetic communication with patients, families and multi-disciplinary healthcare teams; complete accurate documentation and incident reports.
Independently apply full infection control measures including chain of infection knowledge, standard precautions, hand hygiene, PPE and environmental sanitisation.
Grasp basic human anatomy, ageing physical changes and care guidance for common elderly health conditions Graduates are fully qualified to provide safe, humane, standardised care in nursing homes, home care and general clinical support environments.
