Advanced Caregiving+: Elderly Care and Clinical Care

This intermediate specialised training builds targeted elderly and clinical care competencies for caregivers and healthcare assistants. It covers holistic ageing support, fall risk mitigation, pressure ulcer management, continence & catheter care, handling common geriatric illnesses, plus guided hands-on clinical care practice to safely manage complex elderly patient needs.

Course Summary: Advanced Caregiving Skills

This course contains 5 core training modules plus a dedicated hands-on practical session, fully matching Day 3 intermediate caregiving training agenda:

Module 1: Understanding Ageing and Elderly Care

Core learning topics:

  • Physical changes in ageing

  • Psychological changes

  • Social needs of older adults

  • Promoting independence

Module breakdown:

Gain holistic insight into the full spectrum of ageing. Identify common physical and mental psychological shifts experienced by seniors, understand their unique social and emotional support requirements, and learn person-centred approaches to preserve and encourage maximum daily independence for elderly patients.

Module 2: Fall Prevention

Core learning topics:

  • Risk factors for falls

  • Environmental safety

  • Fall prevention strategies

  • Post-fall observation and reporting

Module breakdown:

Recognise internal and external fall risk factors among older adults. Optimise living and care environments to eliminate hazards, apply routine fall prevention protocols for daily care, and master standard observation steps and formal incident documentation after any fall event.

Module 3: Pressure Ulcer Prevention

Core learning topics:

  • Causes of pressure ulcers

  • Risk assessment

  • Repositioning techniques

  • Skin care management

  • Documentation

Module breakdown:

Learn the root causes of pressure sores and how to complete simple patient risk screening. Master scheduled safe repositioning techniques, daily protective skin care routines, and accurate record-keeping for pressure area status to avoid wound development in bedridden or immobile elderly.

Module 4: Urinary and Bowel Care

Core learning topics:

  • Urinary incontinence management

  • Catheter care

  • Monitoring urine output

  • Constipation management

  • Bowel care procedures

Module breakdown:

Cover full continence support for elderly patients. Learn gentle incontinence care routines, standard sterile catheter maintenance, how to track urine output volumes, safe constipation relief methods and step-by-step routine bowel care procedures.

Module 5: Common Medical Conditions

Core learning topics:

  • Stroke care

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Dementia care

  • Diabetes awareness

  • Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) awareness

Module breakdown:

Build foundational care knowledge for prevalent geriatric chronic illnesses. Learn core supportive care approaches for stroke survivors, Parkinson’s, dementia, diabetes and MSA patients, including tailored daily care adjustments to accommodate each condition’s unique symptoms and limitations.

Practical Session

Hands-on supervised practice covering:

  • Pressure ulcer prevention techniques

  • Catheter care demonstration

  • Repositioning and pressure area care

Overall Course Outcomes:

By the end of this Advanced+ 301 intermediate course, participants will have the necessary skills to:

  1. Provide holistic elderly care that addresses physical, psychological and social ageing changes while supporting patient independence

  2. Identify fall risks, implement environment safety measures, apply prevention strategies and conduct proper post-fall observation & reporting

  3. Assess pressure ulcer risks, perform regular repositioning, deliver protective skin care and complete relevant care documentation

  4. Manage urinary incontinence, perform standard catheter care, monitor urine output and safely support bowel and constipation management

  5. Deliver appropriate supportive care for seniors living with stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, diabetes and Multiple System Atrophy

  6. Demonstrate practical pressure area care, repositioning and catheter care skills through supervised hands-on training
